Arnos Vale, St. Vincent – June 28, 2017 – Led by outstanding performances from fast bowling allrounder Rayon Williams and captain Jeremy Layne, the SVG youngsters started their title defense of the Winlott WICBC Under 19 tournament with impressive style.

SVG won the toss and inserted Dominica who was allowed to make only 90 in their first effort at the crease. Rayon Williams spearheaded the bowling with a magnificent 6 for 25 off 9.3 overs. Jerremy Haywood with his off spin supported with excellent bowling figures of 3 for 12 from 10 overs.

Jahiel Walters, the youngest player on the team at age 15 then ensured that SVG got a good start in their response, stroking 55, laced with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Despite a rocky middle performance, Skipper Layne made certain that there were no scared with a brilliant 86 not out, comprised of 12 fours and 2 sixes, which took the team to a total of 269. Other notable scorers were Haywood 28, Tijourn Pope 27, vice captain Dillon Douglas 24.

Dominica with a deficit of 179, provided more resistance in their second attempt, scoring 225. Captain Tahj Tavernier hitting 66 and Lincoln Durand 33. Rayon Williams again led the bowling with another 5 wickets haul, ending the match with figures of 11 for 66 runs. Sealron Williams and Roshorn John took 2 wickets each.

Left with 47 to win, SVG openers provided the Dominicans with no hope, reaching the total without losing a wicket, and securely a discipline 10 wicket victory. Sealroy Williams, the twin of Sealron finished with a brisk 38 from 26 balls, including 8 fours and a six. Walters ended not out on 6.

In the other match, host St. Lucia defeated Grenada. Scores: Grenada 73 and 221, St. Lucia 152 and 143 for 5.

The Winlott Windward Islands Under 19 tournament continues with the second round on 28 June. SVG will play St. Lucia, while both Dominica and Grenada try for their first win.
